Manifesto breakdown

Overview

The Democratic Unionist party (DUP) is a strongly unionist party but is also perceived to be a right wing Conservative party with strong Christian convictions. It can be argued that one of the reasons the DUP became the largest unionist party in Northern Ireland is through their hard stances on sectarian issues but also policy issues. That is why we were surprised to see that the DUP manifesto scored a 27% on our left/right scale, meaning that they only just break the barrier into being a moderate right wing party rather than a centre right party. Their stances on social issues, healthcare and corporation tax are their strongest held right wing views (however their views on social security and education looks somewhat left wing). Overall, the DUP appeared to be slightly less hardlined on certain topics than would have been assumed of the party.

It should be noted than the manifesto used was from 2017, so some policy positions may have changed slightly over the three following years.
