DUP voting analysis
Overview
Democratic Unionist Party (DUP - Founded in 1971) is a strongly unionist party but is also perceived to be a right wing Conservative party with strong Christian convictions. We gave them a manifesto score of 27% on the left/right scale. Meaning that they can be considered to be a fairly right wing party ideologically, however they are quite close to being centre right. When looking at their voting record, we gave them a score of 44% on the left/right scale. This would suggest that they generally vote right and are committed to a right wing ideology and are not close to being centre right in reality. This might suggest that their manifesto is a softened version of their actual beliefs and their true ideology lies closer to a moderate right wing position than it does to any centre right ideology. When looking at party MLAs, we can see that some members do hold strong right wing beliefs, Robbie Newton being the furthest to the right with a score of 62%. Arelene Foster, the party’s leader, also scored highly on the left/right scale, with a 58%. Making it look like the party is committed to a moderate right wing position.
