Manifesto breakdown

Overview

The Traditional Unionist Voices (TUV - Founded in 2007) is a staunchly unionist party regularly associated with right wing tendencies. Despite once being an ex-member of the DUP, the party leader and sole MLA, Jim Allister, is thought to share many of the same views as his previous colleagues (having left due to a disagreement in entering government with Sinn Fein). This suggested to us a likely commitment to a strong right wing ideology which we found when analysing TUV’s manifesto. On the left/right scale, TUV scored a 60% which puts the party well beyond the DUP as a right leaning ideologue. The party was particularly committed to far right thoughts when looking at social issues and economic policy, making Jim Allister’s political beliefs align with the preconception most would hold of the man.

It should be noted, the manifesto was not a fully fleshed out set of policies. Generally the manifesto was committed to approaching sectarian issues rather than taking positions on policy responses, so our analysis on certain topics was limited. We were not able to make an accurate representation of the parties position on those matters. However, a general ideological position was present in other sections of the manifesto.
