Sinn Fein voting analysis
Overview
Sinn Fein (founded 1905/1970) are traditionally associated with being staunchly nationalist, however there is also an assumption that they are one of the most left leaning major parties in Northern Ireland. When looking at their manifesto, we found that they scored a -50% on the left/right scale. Meaning they are moderately left wing in their ideological beliefs. When looking at their voting record, we found that they scored a -54% on the left/right scale. Meaning that their manifesto was fairly accurate to their actual beliefs, with their voting score and manifesto score only being separated by 4%. However, within the party, there did seem to be an array of beliefs with one or two members being close to a centre left position (e.g. Sinead Ennis) and others being slightly more radical than other members (e.g. Carál Ní Chuilín). The party leader, Michelle O’Neill, scored a -56% on the left/right scale, making her fit into the party’s average and appear to be a good representative of the party’s ideals.
